If you are installing in a multi-server environment, you must run the Serena ALM installer on the machine where the SBM Application Engine resides. This can be run either locally or remotely. This installs the Serena Common Tomcat, the Web services, and the Serena ALM SBM components on the Application Engine machine.
To install Serena ALM:
Download the full installation package from the Serena Support Web site, My Downloads page. Extract the files.
On the SBM Server, run the Serena ALM installer executable, ALM.exe or ALM 64-bit.exe depending on your server type.
NOTE If you are installing in a multi-server environment, you must run the Serena ALM installer on the machine where the SBM Application Engine resides.
You may be asked to install Windows Installer 4.5, in which case:
Click Install.
When asked if you want to reboot your machine, reply Yes.
The Serena ALM Welcome page appears.
Click Next.
The License Agreement page appears.
Confirm and click Next.
The Destination Folder page appears.
Optionally click Change to change the target location for the installation.
Click Next.
The Product selection page appears.
The shell and database schema for the Agile features of Development Manager are installed.
NOTES
Selecting the Development Manager option does not require you to use the Agile option with Development Manager, but if you do not select it, the components required for Agile are not installed. If you are undecided, select it.
You cannot deselect Release Control. Whether or not you have access to Release Control will be determined by which solutions you import and which snapshots you promote.
Click Next.
The Custom Setup page appears. The options shown on this page depend on whether or not Dimensions CM is installed on the same sever as SBM.
Click to select or deselect components to install. An X on the installation tree entry icon indicates the component is not selected. To select any deselected components, expand the entry and select one of the feature installation options.
Agile Configuration: Install and configure the agile component of Development Manager.
NOTE If you selected Development Control on the previous page, the option Agile Configuration will be selected, but you can deselect it. If you did not select Development Manager, this option will be deselected and you will not be able to select it.
ALM Foundation Services: Common services to enable the Serena ALM solution.
Configurator SSO Support: Configure the connection to the Serena Single Sign-on server to enable login to the Configurator through SSO.
Connectors | Quality Center Connector: Integrate Development Control with external tools such as Quality Center.
Providers: Common Framework for all ALM Suites for configuration of supported Serena and non-Serena tools.
ALM Workbench: Common role-based User Interface across the ALM Suites to optimize the user experience.
ALM Process Application: SBM solution files. The solution files must be imported into an SBM application repository.
Click Next.
The Configuration Details page appears.
The installer indicates whether a valid version of SBM and the Serena common Tomcat Web server are installed. It installs Tomcat if needed.
NOTE Beginning with Serena ALM version 4.0.1, the installation includes a version of the Serena Common Tomcat Web server that requires Dimensions CM 12.2.2 and is not backwards compatible with previous releases of Dimensions CM.
If your configuration co-locates Serena ALM with Dimensions CM 12.2.1.1 or older, Dimensions CM must be upgraded before installing Serena ALM 4.0.1 or later.
The Serena ALM 4.5 installer will upgrade the Serena Common Tomcat Web server if the older version is detected. This upgrade moves the pre-existing Tomcat files into a backup location, and then installs the new common tools.
Click Next.
If you selected Configurator SSO Support, the Serena Single Sign On page appears.
CAUTION! You should configure the Configurator SSO Support only once. If you run the installer again to install additional options, you must deselect this option. Otherwise, SSO may not function correctly. Also you should not use localhost for the server name but should specify the name of the actual server.
Specify the host name and port for an existing installation of a Serena SSO server.
If you want the connection to use HTTPS, select Secure (HTTPS) Connection.
Click Next.
If you selected the Agile Configuration option, the Connection details page appears.

The installation log file appears. You can navigate to this file later to view installation details, for example for troubleshooting purposes. The default location for the file is:
%Temp%\Install_SUITE_comp.log or
%Temp%\Install_SUITE_comp64.log
The installer creates the following file and folders under the Serena Solutions installation directory path. For example:
..\Program Files\Serena\Solutions (contains the shell zip file)
\solution(contains the solution files)
\war (contains the war files)
The installer does the following automatically:
Copies the war files to the Tomcat Web server and restarts Tomcat.
Puts the user interface files in the appropriate SBM folder and imports them into the database.
Copies the ALM SBM solution files to the solutions folder for the Serena Common JBoss.
Copies Agile database upgrade files to the solutions/Agile folder.
To check that ALM is installed into Tomcat, enter the URL:
http://<servername>:8080/alm/config/alm
in a web browser.
This should display the login page, or if you are already logged in, the ALM Configurator.
You can also enter the URL:

in a web browser to check the ALM Foundation Services for Products and Components.
