2.0 Known Issues in Tracker 8.x

2.1 When Tracker 7.x and Tracker 8.x are Both Installed

After installing Tracker 8.x your existing server definitions will no longer work with Tracker 7.5 (with the exception of any Microsoft SQL Server definitions). To create a server definition that will work with Tracker 7.5 you must do the following:

  1. Create a data source that uses the PVCS Tracker 4.1 driver. Refer to Chapter 1 of the Tracker Installation Guide.

  2. Create a server definition that uses the data source you just created in step 1. Refer to "Configuring ODBC Data Sources" in Chapter 6 of the Tracker Installation Guide.

2.2 Notice About Opening Tracker 7.x Projects on Tracker 8.x

You can open your Tracker 7.x projects on Tracker 8. You will have limited features available to you until you upgrade your projects. See Chapter 5 "Creating and Managing Projects" in the Merant Tracker Administrator's Guide for more information on what features are and are not available.

2.3 session_cached_cursor=50 Should Be Set in Oracle's init.ora

Currently, Tracker throws away every cursor it uses immediately after it completes processing the current SQL statement with it. This causes server-side cursor thrashing. Adding the session_cached_cursor=50 parameter to the init.ora file on Oracle servers will allow the server to cut down the amount of thrashing. 50 may not be the ideal number, but it can be a starting value. This applies to Oracle version 8.x or later.

2.4 dBase is No Longer Supported for Tracker 8.x

Support for the dBase database has been discontinued. Your 7.x learning project will not support some new features in Tracker 8.x. You can create a new project or copy an existing project into Tracker 8.x. You can also set up a database using an MSDE already installed on your system.

2.5 Tracker Web Client Print Options are Saved Only for Upgraded Projects

In the Tracker web client, the print options are saved only when the project is upgraded to Tracker 8.x and cannot be saved when you are using an old project format. The print options are dependent on the current Tracker 8.x schema.

2.6 Notify Service Manger is Not Updating or Refreshing Views

If you enable or disable nodes in the Notify Service Manager, the detail pane on the right side does not update with the new values. To refresh the view you need to change the nodes.

2.7 Notify Service Manager Does Not Save Data if the Directory Does Not Exist

The Notify Service Manager does not save the config data in the configuration file if the directory does not exist. To create a new directory automatically:

  1. Open Notify Service Manager.

  2. Right-click the top node (Tracker Notify Service), and select Properties from the pop-up menu.

  3. In the Tracker Notify Service Properties dialog box, make sure the Log to File check box is selected.

  4. Close the dialog box by clicking OK.

  5. Start then stop Notify Service using either the context menu of the Tracker Notify Service node or the toolbar buttons.

The directory exists when Notify Service creates the log file directory. To verify, add a server definition, close Notify Service Manager, and then reopen it. If the server definition that was added appears under the Tracker Notify Service node after Notify Service Manager is reopened, the configuration file is saved correctly.

2.8 Windows XP Might Display a Warning About Replaced Files

If you install Tracker 8 on a machine that has been running Tracker 7.x, Windows XP might display a warning about replaced files. This is because Tracker overwrites older Tracker files in the WINNT or Windows directory. You can safely cancel the warning dialog box and click Yes to dismiss a subsequent "Are you sure?" message box.

2.9 System Administrator Password Needed to Set Up MSDE Learning Project

If you installed the MSDE along with Tracker, the system administrator password for the MSDE is PVCSTracker#1.

See "Appendix C: Evaluating Tracker Using MSDE" in the Merant Tracker Administrator's Guide for more information.

2.10 SQL Query Fails from Report Assistant

SQL query statements generated by the Tracker Administrator Report Assistant may include an extra comma ( , ), which causes execution of the queries to fail. If the query statement fails, you can save the statement and edit it in order to run it correctly. Look for an extra comma before the "from" option. Delete this comma. For example, in the following lines:

"User6" = trkusr_42.usrFullNm,

from
Project2.ChRqTTracker_Report_Assistant_Proj_02,

Delete the comma following usrFullNm.

2.11 Tracker Web Server Installation Does Not Verify or Set IUSR Permissions

The Tracker Web Server installation does not verify or set IUSR permissions for the temp directory it creates. Tracker uses this directory to store uploaded notes and files. If you see the error "Unable to write temporary file to tempDirectory" in your browser when you try to attach a file or add a note to a Tracker issue, check the Windows security permissions for the temp directory.

2.12 Installing Tracker Can Overwrite Existing SQL Instance

If you have an existing SQL instance called "TRACKERLP80", the Tracker installation will detach TRKMASTER in this instance and add the Software Learning Project and the Sales Learning Project. This causes the existing projects configured in this instance to be inaccessible and only recoverable by reattaching. (See "Reattaching an Existing Database" in Chapter 5 of the Merant Tracker Administrator's Guide.)

It is best not to install the Software Learning Project or the Sales Learning Project if you have an SQL instance named "TRACKERLP80".

2.13 Tracker 8 Check Box Unchecked by Tracker 7.x

If the "Include Notify Rules as multiple records separator" check box (User Options | Automatic Notification) is selected in a Tracker 7.x project and you make modifications to related settings using Tracker 7.x, the check box becomes deselected.

2.14 UNIX Users: Wait for the OK Button Before Logging In

On the login page for the UNIX web client, wait for the button text to change from Wait... to OK before you either click the button or press Enter; otherwise, TrackerLink associations may not work.

2.15 MSDE Users: Upgrading from 8.0.0.0 to 8.0.2.0

You must uninstall the MSDE installed with Tracker 8.0.0.0 before you install Tracker 8.0.2.0.

NOTE: The MSDE installed with Tracker appears as "Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (TRACKER)" in the Add/Remove Programs window.

2.16 SQL Server and Sybase Users: DBMS UserID Other Than sa

If the administrator uses a DBMS userid other than sa, the user "tracker" will not have permissions to the new tables created during the installation even though the pvcstrkusr role has the permissions. The DBA must change the owner of the new tables to "dbo" and then re-add the permissions on the new tables to the pvcstrkusr role.

2.17 Windows 2000 Users: Service Pack 4 Required for Notify Service

To use Notify Service on Windows 2000, you must install Service Pack 4 from Microsoft.

2.18 Mozilla Users: Browser Bug Affects Custom Query Dialog Box

If you use the Mozilla browser, be sure to upgrade to the newest version; otherwise, you might need to open the Build Custom Query dialog box (Query | New) two or three times to get the browser to display it properly. (This is a known Mozilla issue.)

2.19 Notes Now Appear Most-Recent First

Starting with Tracker 8.0, notes appear in descending time order; that is, the most recent note is first. This applies to the list of notes on the General tab, on the Notes tab, and in the issue's detail view.

2.20 Reboot Required After You Install the MSDE

After you install the MSDE (for use with the Learning Projects), Tracker prompts you to reboot your system. The MSDE requires a reboot under various circumstances; so to be safe, Tracker requires the reboot.

2.21 Web Client: Select Columns Feature Stores a Maximum of 25 Fields

If the number of selected columns exceeds 25 after you add columns using the Select Columns feature, only the first 25 columns will appear in your In Tray or your query's summary view.

2.22 Web Client: Manual Notify Requires SMTP-Format E-Mail Addresses

If any e-mail addresses (including your From address) in an e-mail notification are non–SMTP-style addresses, no mail will be delivered.

2.23 Cannot View Attached Files in dBase Projects

In Tracker 8, if you are using a dBase project in Tracker 7.5 format (dBase is not supported for Tracker 8 projects), you cannot view attached files.

2.24 MSDE Database Cannot Handle DBCS Characters

If you are using the Tracker MSDE database, existing projects cannot have DBCS (non-English) characters, and new projects cannot have DBCS characters in the project name or in other system-level names. If you want to test DBCS characters (other than in system-level names), you can copy an existing project into a new project (see "Creating a New Project Based on an Existing One" in the Tracker Administrator's Guide).

NOTE: This issue pertains only to the MSDE database, which is for evaluation purposes only.

2.25 Anonymous Submit Can Use Only the Default Issue Type

In the web client, the issue type for an anonymous submission is determined by the default issue type. However, you can specify the issue type by adding a hidden field to the form element on your web site where visitors may request to file an anonymous submission. Add the following line (substituting the actual issue type for Issue_Type_Name) somewhere between the opening and closing FORM tags:

<input type="hidden" name="issueType" value="Issue_Type_Name">

2.26 Windows 2003 Server: Query in the Web Client Displays a Blank Screen

If you are using IIS 6 on Windows 2003 Server, you need to define a MIME type for .properties files:

  1. Open IIS (Internet Information Services) from Control Panel | Administrative Tools.

  2. Under Web Sites, right-click Default Web Site or whatever name pertains to your web site, and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.

  3. Click the HTTP Headers tab.

  4. Click the MIME Types button.

  5. Click New. The MIME Types dialog box appears.

  6. Define a new MIME type with .properties as the extension and text/plain as the MIME type.

2.27 Cross-Project Relationships Support Only the "Informational" Relationship Type

At this time, you can create cross-project relationships using the Informational relationship type only. Though you can set up other relationships, you cannot save them.

2.28 Error Can Occur If a Project Has a Choice Field Named "Issue Type"

If a Tracker project has a choice field named "Issue Type" created through Tracker Admin, adding or updating an issue in the Tracker desktop client produces an error.

Workaround: Rename the choice field. For example, you can rename it to "issue type" (the field name is case-sensitive).

2.29 Web Server Project Definitions Do Not Contain the Correct DBMS Password

The password for the DBMS user has changed; however, the Learning Project definitions for the Web have not been updated. This causes an error when you try to log in to the Learning Projects.

Workaround

To fix the web logins for the Learning Projects, perform the following steps:

  1. Open the Tracker Web Client Sample Page.

  2. Click Tracker Web Configuration.

  3. On the Merant Tracker Project Database Login page, provide the following information:

Database Type: Select Tracker SQL Server Sys

    Database Location: Enter (local)\TRACKERLP80

    Database Username: Enter tracker

    Database Password: Enter PVCSTracker#1

  4. Click OK. The Merant Tracker Administrator Login page appears.

  5. Perform the following steps for each Learning Project (Software Learning Project, Asset Learning Project, and Sales Learning Project):

    1. On the Merant Tracker Administrator Login page, provide the following information:

      User ID: Enter Admin

      Password: Leave blank

Project: Select one of the Learning Projects (Software, Asset, or Sales)

    2. Click OK.

    3. On the Merant Tracker Configure Project page, click Configure. Then click Switch Project to return to step a.

3.0 Known Issues in Tracker

3.1 Now Possible to Add a Workstation Installation to the Tracker Web Installation

When you install the Tracker web client, you can now create workstation installations from the machine where you installed the web client. Do this by performing the web installation first and then the workstation installation. When you install the workstation, you can modify your web installation to add the workstation setup.

3.2 Using Sun's JRE 1.4.0x is Not Recommended for TrackerLink in the VM Web Client

Using Sun's JRE 1.4.0x may cause instabilities and is not recommended for TrackerLink in the VM web client. Use JRE 1.3x or 1.4.1x.

3.3 Version Manager and Visual Source Safe Use Different Terms for "Checking In Workfiles"

In Version Manager, the term for the default workfile location is "working directory" when you are checking in documents. In Microsoft Visual SourceSafe, the term for the default workfile location is "checkout location". The documentation implies that the default term for the check-out location is "working directories". When checking in documents, make sure that you are checking in the checked-out file from the right location to the right archive.

3.4 Web Client Installation Requires You to Restart All Web Servers

Tracker shuts down your web servers when installing the Tracker web client. After installation, you need to restart the web server. If you have several web servers running, you might need to restart all of them.

3.5 iPlanet Requires Restart After You Install the Tracker Web Client

If you are using the iPlanet web server when installing the Tracker web server, you need to reboot your machine to update the path and to reload the modified configuration files.

3.6 Use Add/Remove Programs to Modify an Installed Version of Tracker

If you need to modify an installation of Tracker, use Add/Remove Programs to remove part or all of Tracker first.

3.7 Multiple Login Sessions in the Tracker Web Client Not Recommended

It is recommended to log in to only one Tracker web-client project at a time from any one workstation. If you are logged in with multiple browser sessions, unexpected behavior can occur.

3.8 Edit Sybase SQL Statement Before Upgrading Tracker Projects

Before upgrading Tracker projects to use Tracker 8 functionality, you need to set the "ddl in tran" option to true. You can do this from an SQL command prompt, or you can do the following in Sybase Central:

  1. Edit the properties of the database.

  2. Check the "ddl in tran" option on the Options tab.

After upgrading your projects, turn off the "ddl in tran" option to avoid performance hits to your project database.

3.9 When Tracker Is Installed with the MSDE, the SQL Server 7 Enterprise Manager Settings Are Lost

In this case, SEM becomes mostly unusable. You can find more information in the following Microsoft technical document:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;295026

3.10 Notify Service Does Not Run on 64-Bit Windows

Tracker installs; however, the Notify service fails to start. Windows reports an error in dllhost.exe.

3.11 Uninstalling Tracker Does Not Remove All Files

After uninstalling Tracker, you might want to remove any files remaining in the Tracker directory. You might also want to remove any remaining Tracker entries in the Start Menu.

3.12 Only 100 Issue Types Are Active When You Submit a New Issue

When you submit a new issue, only the first 100 issue types are active. The remaining types appear grayed out.

3.13 Trend Report Displays the Wrong Date Range

When you run a Trend Report for a specified date range, the graph displays data for a range one day earlier than the range specified.
