Creating Environment Groups

Environment groups are logical representations of groups of physical environments used by your organization. For example, you may decide to group several QA environments, such as INT, UAT, and SIT, into a group called QA Group.

Prerequisites: Environments must be placed online before they can be added to an environment group.

When you deploy to an environment group, the deployment tasks are run in parallel in those environments.

Environment groups are created in the Environments process app.

Users who are assigned to these roles in the Environments process app can create and manage environment groups:

To create an environment group:

  1. In Work Center, click New.
  2. Search for the project that will store your environment group, and then select the project to open a Submit form. (By default, the Environment Groups project is used to store environment groups.)
  3. Fill out the required fields and any optional fields.
    • Select the accessibility of the environment group as follows:
      • Standard: Release packages can be promoted into the environment group by users other than the Release Manager.
      • Restricted: Only the Release Manager can promote release packages into the environment group.
    • Select whether deployment approval is required. If Yes, approval will be required upon promotion to this environment group. Approvals will be generated as follows:
      • If approval is required for the environment group but not for the environment, an approval will be generated when a deployable release train or a release package is deployed to the environment group.
      • If approval is required for at least one environment in the environment group but not for the environment group itself, an approval will be generated when a deployable release train or a release package is deployed to the environment that requires approval. Upon approval to that environment, approval is also done for any additional environments.
      • If approval is required for any of the environments in the environment group and also for the environment group, an approval will be generated when a deployable release train or a release package is deployed to the environment group. No additional approvals will be generated for the individual environments.
      • If approvals are not required for any of the environments or for the environment group, no approvals are generated when a deployable release train or a release package is deployed to the environment group.
  4. Select the environments in the list of eligible environments.
Note: You can select only environments that have the same accessibility as that specified for the group.
  5. Select the release engineer who is responsible for the environment group.
  6. Click Submit.
  7. Click Activate.
