Service management is about the management of configuration items. The Configuration Management Database (CMDB) domain model describes the objects that may be related to a configuration item.
The Configuration Management Database domain model includes the following objects.
A request for change that has been submitted to the IT operations group, in response to particular problems or incidents.
A CI may be any object that is affected by a related change request. CIs are classified into types, categories, and subcategories. A CO can be related to any number of other CIs. A CI can be broken down into the following example types, as in this model:
Service.
Hardware. This may be further categorized into storage, network, or server hardware.
Software.
A service is a particular activity or action to be delivered in response to a service request, and as required by the established Service Level Agreement (SLA). Services may include providing new computers, upgrading specific software packages, etc. A service is a configuration item related to the change request. In this domain model, services may aggregate any number of servers, where software is to be installed or modified. Services may also aggregate any number of applications to be modified.
