1.0 What's New
1.1 What's New in Serena Development Manager 4.5
Serena® Development Manager is a solution that integrates development project management, change request and task management, version control, and baseline management features, with the option of a rich dashboard reporting component. It enables you to orchestrate and monitor your key software development efforts, tracking source code changes and approvals through a central workflow engine.
1.2 New Features
With this release the following new features are available:
-
Agile Epic-Story-Task Hierarchy
-
Start with epics in product backlogs
-
Break down epics into stories in product and release backlogs
-
Break down stories into tasks in sprint backlogs
- Use ranking and hierarchy views for epics and stories in backlogs
-
Create stories at the top level rather than epics if appropriate
-
Create epics that span releases; some stories may be in one release and some in another
-
Allow in-place editing of Story Points for epics and stories in the Backlog pane
-
Show Total Story Points in the Backlog pane
Epic, Story, and Task Process App Independency
In the default configuration, a story is tracked using a development change request, and a task is tracked using a development task. These will follow the existing lifecycles for those items in Development Manager.
However:
- You may configure Agile to use your own process app for epic instead of the Development Change Request process app
- You may configure Agile to use your own process app for story instead of the Development Change Request process app
- You may configure Agile to use your own process app for task instead of the Development Task process app
- Process App and Related Tools Independency
-
Action selections are now available in the Development Manager forms for native SBM user interface features like Add Note, File, Item, Notification and Print, and Workflow View
-
The Social widget is made available as a toggle between the details of an item and social postings in relation to the work
- The Demand widget and Time Capture widget are available for enabling integration with Serena Demand Manager and other extensions

3.0 Installation Considerations
This section contains information and issues that require your attention in order to install and configure Serena Development Manager successfully.
3.0.1 Installing this Release
The installation process has been simplified and streamlined for this release. If you are upgrading, be sure to read through the Upgrade Considerations section.
You must install several components to use Serena Development Manager:
- Serena Business Manager
- Serena ALM, which includes a number of Business Manager process apps that integrate all of your processes together
In addition, you require one or more of the following:
- Serena Dimensions CM
- Serena ChangeMan ZMF
- Serena ALM Dashboard
- Serena Connector for HP Quality Centre
For information about installing and configuring these components, please refer
to the Serena ALM Installation and Configuration Guide.
HP Quality Center Connector
When running the Serena ALM installer on a 64-bit server with the QC Connector option selected, the installation will fail if the QC OTA Client is not installed.
You will need to install this in order to Install DVM. For details see the Serena Business Manager Connector for HP Quality Center Installation and Configuration Guide.
When installing Serena ALM using Remote Desktop access to a Windows 2003 system, the installation may fail if you include the Connector to Quality Center option. To avoid this issue, run Remote Desktop in Console or Administration mode by running one of the following commands:
mstsc /admin
or
mstsc /console
4.0 Upgrade Considerations
The upgrade from Serena Release Manager version 4.0.1 to version 4.5 may be done using the Serena ALM installer and post-installation instructions as documented in the Serena ALM Installation and Configuration Guide.
4.0.1 Major Changes
Some of the major changes in this release are:
-
Agile database: The structure of the Agile database has changed. You must upgrade your Agile database using the provided scripts. You must do this after running the installer but before promoting the Serena Development Manager solution and importing its process app snapshots.
-
Multiple solution files: The formerly single Serena ALM solution has been divided into four distinct solutions to make it easier to configure any single solution or just the combination you want. Solution files are provided for each of the following:
-
Serena Release Manager (RLM)
-
Serena Development Manager (DVM)
-
Products and Components for Serena Development Manager (OPD)*
-
Serena Requirements Manager (RQM)
* OPD = Orchestrated Process Development
- Independent solutions: You no longer need to promote Products and Components and Requirements Manager snapshots for Development Manager to
function properly. The solutions for these are now completely separate.
- Renamed process apps: The process apps have been renamed to make their purpose easier to identify. The old and new names are given in the following table.

4.0.2 Configuration File Changes
There are several new configuration files, some files have new or updated properties, and some properties in the Agile
config.properties
file have been deprecated. See the comments in the files and the associated documentation in the
Serena ALM Installation and Configuration Guide, "Configuration File Reference".
4.0.3 Upgrading of the QC Connector
If you have updated your version of SBM since the last time you installed the Serena Connector for Quality Center, you must uninstall the existing version of the QC Connector before running the installer for Serena ALM 4.5.
This is because the QC Connector is installed against a specific version of SBM. If the SBM version entered during the install of the QC Connector as part of ALM 4.5 does not match that entered during the original installation of the QC Connector, the upgrade does not take place.
NOTE This installation includes a version of the
Serena Common Tomcat Web server that requires Dimensions CM 12.2.2
and is not backwards compatible with previous releases of Dimensions
CM.
If your configuration co-locates
Serena ALM with Dimensions CM 12.2.1.1 or older, Dimensions CM
must be upgraded before installing Serena ALM.
The Serena ALM 4.5 installer will upgrade the Serena Common
Tomcat Web server if the older version is detected. This upgrade
moves the pre-existing Tomcat files into a backup location, and then installs the new common tools.
5.0 Known Issues
For a complete list of known issues and potential workarounds, refer to the Serena Customer Support Knowledgebase.
Issues known to exist in Serena Development Manager 4.5 are as follows:
-
If you edit the DVM - Development Tasks process app, before you can deploy it, you must first open the DVM - Development Change Request process app in your local cache. Otherwise,
the validation will fail and you cannot deploy the DVM - Development Tasks process app. (DEF236447)
- If you receive a General Error message at the top of an Agile form when trying to work with Agile items, this may be due to an internal error, "405 - Method Not Allowed" for the PUT method. This means your IIS Web server is preventing the HTTP verb for some reason. This could be because of conflicts with the WebDAV service running under IIS. One solution is to remove the WebDAV service from IIS. For other possible workarounds, see the Knowledgebase information associated with this defect. (DEF232397)
